Excellent overview. I love chateaux, and I love The Chateau Diaries -- I've even been to stay at Lalande -- but I have no intention of buying a chateau for myself. I could probably afford to purchase some neglected old pile, but it's the cost of restoration and maintenance that's truly ruinous. If you're not a plutocrat, it's really only feasible if you turn your chateau into a business. That's not what I would want it for. Nonetheless, building a chateau from would be an amazing project.
